This happens because the CVT forces the engine to continuously run a constantly high rpm as it gets up to speed. If you prefer a sportier driving experience, then the lack of fixed gears makes the ride less engaging.Īnother complaint that drivers tend to make about a CVT is the loud droning sound that occurs during acceleration. While the lack of upshifting and downshifting is considered an advantage of the CVT, some drivers miss the sensation of the vehicle moving through the shift points. It has an easier time taking off from a stoplight and an easier time climbing difficult terrain because the variable transmission allows it to run in the right "gear" and stay there. There is no abrupt downshifting when the car needs additional power, and there is no feeling of gear hunting that you sometimes feel with a traditional automatic.Ī CVT is lighter than a traditional automatic, and this, combined with the smoother operation, helps to improve the fuel efficiency of vehicles that come equipped with a CVT.īecause of the lack of gearing, it is easier for CVT vehicles to find and maintain an ideal torque ratio as well. This is because the transmission never shifts. CVTs often offer better fuel economy as a result, especially when driving in the city.ĭigital Trends says that most cars equipped with CVTs offer a smoother ride than a similar car with a regular automatic. This means that no matter what the engine speed it, it is always performing at its peak efficiency. One of the advantages of a CVT is its ability to continuously change its gear ratio. Which Is Better Between CVT and Automatic Transmission? Toyota says that using these new fixed gear ratios will not only feel more like a regular transmission it will also increase belt efficiency and improve performance. As the vehicle speeds up, the transmission will switch this out, so it starts working as a CVT. The launch gear is almost like the first gear in a regular automatic transmission. CNET says it now uses what they call a Launch gear to provide drivers with the feeling of a conventional transmission. Toyota recently made some changes to its CVT. The hydrostatic CVT uses pumps to control fluid flow, which then produces a rotational motion. The most common type is the pulley-based, but some other types include the Toroidal CVT, which uses rotating discs along with power rollers to produce the same result as the pulleys. Since neither the pulleys or the belt are fixed, they can provide an infinite number of gear ratios, unlike the automatic, which has a set number of gears. When one pulley gets larger, the other one gets smaller. The width of the pulleys changes depending on how much power the vehicle needs. One pulley connects to the engine, and the other connects to the wheels. An automatic also has a set number of gears, but it uses a hydraulic system that responds to pressure created by the conditions to determine the gear needed without any input from the driver.Ī CVT is similar to an automatic in that it doesn't use any input from the driver, but that is where the similarities end. A manual has a set number of gears, and the driver determines what gear ratio they need. In order to see how a CVT works, How Stuff Works explains, you need to understand a manual and a traditional automatic. This is part of the reason that they are becoming a more popular choice for automakers in many vehicles. Advantages of CVTĭepending on the vehicle and the driver, a CVT can provide a smoother driving experience when comparing it to a traditional automatic.Īccording to Carfax, one of the most significant advantages to having a CVT is that they are often more fuel-efficient than a regular automatic. What Does CVT Stand For?Īutotrader explains the term CVT stands for continuously variable transmission. It is sometimes referred to as the shiftless transmission and is a type of automatic. The CVT is the newest type of transmission. Even if you don't know much about how a transmission works, you have probably heard of the manual and the automatic. In general, there are three different types of transmissions.

Finally, the shadow walker fills the function one would expect from a rogue, with many skills based on maneuverability and enemy distraction. The shaman is a jack of all trades, providing everything from healing to monster summoning. The sorceress naturally has many powerful spells for attacking large groups of enemies. The blademaster provides the usual warrior abilities of drawing enemy attacks in addition to powerful strikes, including some attacks that damage all those around him. The four classes Avadon provides are blademaster, sorceress, shaman, and shadow walker. Thankfully, the game’s four classes provide a vast array of tools to deal with the various challenges the game will throw the player’s way. The player will often be outnumbered, surrounded, or in the case of many of the game’s fantastic boss encounters, forced to deal with all kinds of extra factors beyond just enemies. The game’s simple combat setup is made interesting by the variety of scenarios the game throws the player’s way. Unless buffed, each character can generally only move and use one attack or ability per turn. As soon as the player is spotted by monsters, or when a specified key is pressed to enter combat mode, everything switches to turn-based. Given the simple look of the game, exploration is quick and easy. It uses a simple point-and-click interface that is easy to navigate. Outside of combat, exploration happens in real time. They also further help to develop the various cultures of Avadon‘s game world.Īvadon would be quite good based on these aforementioned story qualities, but where it truly shines is with its classic turn-based battle system. While breaking the flow of the main adventure a bit, these quests provide a nice to introduce more back story to the party members. These characters will also wander off during certain parts of the story, and lengthy side-quests are required to get each character back. They provide interesting commentary while on quests, and players are even free to chat with them while resting in the fortress of Avadon between objectives. The characters come from various regions, and provide a great way to dynamically teach the player about the game’s world in a way that doesn’t feel forced. They can be brought along two at a time for a max party size of three. In this game however, players only create one character, and there are four other characters, one for each of the game’s classes. Classic style RPGs of this type generally task the player with creating a party from scratch, giving players a great deal of creativity, but preventing the game from providing interesting characters to bring along. Of course, a great story is nothing without good characters, and Avadon certainly provides them. Not everything is answered, as the game clearly sets up potential sequels, but the ending is still quite satisfying. As one completes varying seemingly unrelated quests, a larger plot begins to show itself, with several surprising twists before the end. The missions the supposed heroes are sent out on don’t always feel particularly heroic, and it’s clear that placing the pact above all else, often leaves the common man in the dust. This is due to the fact that players will notice that everything is not quite right with the pact. While this could have made for a rather generic story, the plot picks up rather quickly and provides plenty of intrigue to keep players going. Run by the merciless, and apparently ageless Red Beard, Avadon is certainly a force to be reckoned with. To keep the peace, the titular fortress of Avadon plays host to an elite group of warriors who protect the peace of the pact at all costs. Despite a lackluster visual presentation and minimal sound and music, Avadon manages to tell a compelling fantasy tale full of intrigue and betrayal that players won’t soon forget.Īvadon takes place in a fantasy world where a pact of nations is constantly at risk from outside threats. Rooted squarely in classic PC RPG gameplay, Avadon manages to stick to its roots while still feeling like a very modern RPG, blessed with many of the features that BioWare games brought to RPGs over the years. Within tht post I devoted the right time to expose some theoretical reference to the kmeans algo and it application to images. This processing step was actually the first developed of the package and I already described it in a previous post. We now apply some statistical learning on the array, to select most representative colours and create an optimized palette. This will generate an array having for each point within the image both the cartesian coordinates and the R, G and B values of the related colours. To perform this transformation we use the readJPEG() function from Jpeg package: painting <- readJPEG(image_path) Within the matrix to each image pixel three numbers are associated:Īll those three attributes range from 0 to 255, as requested by the rules of the RGB colourspace ( find out more on the related RGB colourspace page on wikipedia). To do so we read the image file and convert it into a three multidimensional matrix. This first step involves transforming the image into an abstract object on which we can apply statistical learning. Reading a picture into the RGB colourspace – further sample colours to select the most “distant” ones. – remove too bright and too dark colours leveraging HSV colour system properties – apply kmeans algo on it and draw a sample of representative colours – convert into a three-dimensional RGB matrix The main idea behind paletteR code is quite simple: Here it is the code (you can donwload the picture from wikicommons visiting ): create_palette(image_path = "~/Desktop/410px-Piero_della_Francesca_046.jpg",Īs you see the palette drawn contains all the most representative colours, like the red of the carpets or the wonderful blue of San Giovanni Battista on the left of the painting. – make clear if we need a palette for quantitative or qualitative variables, using the _type_of_variable_ arg. – specify tcolorser of colours we want to draw specifying the _number_of_colours_ attribute – pass the full path to the image through the _image_path_ arg Install_github("andreacirilloac/paletter") Since paletteR is available only trough Github we have to install it using devtools: library(devtools) Let’s try to apply it on the “Vergine con il Bambino, angeli e Santi” before looking into its functional specification. The package extracts a custom number of representative colours from the image. PaletteR is a lean R package which lets you draw from any custom image an optimized palette of colours. This is where Paletter comes from: bring the Renaissance wisdom and beauty within the plots we produce every day. While I was looking at the painting I started, wondering how we moved from this wisdom to the ugly charts you can easily find within today’s corporate reports ( find a great sample on the WTF visualization website) If you see this painting you will find a profound of colours with a great equilibrium between different hues, the hardy usage of complementary colours and the ability expressed in the “chiaroscuro” technique. During my visit I was particularly impressed from one of them: “La Vergine con il Bambino, angeli e Santi”, by Piero della Francesca. This museum is full of incredible paintings from the Renaissance period. During a lunch break I was visiting the Pinacoteca di Brera, a 200 centuries old museum. I live in Italy, and more precisely in Milan, a city known for fashion and design events. So if your TV only has an optical output, and your amplifier only has a coaxial digital audio input, then an audio extractor with a coaxial output can quickly solve this problem. In the above example, you could also use an extractor to easily change the audio output type. So with specific equipment, chances are an HDMI audio extractor is the best way to re-route the audio signal. In this case, the TV extracts the audio from the picture and allows you to send it elsewhere.īut, there are times when a dedicated device is the only way to do this, like if you wire your system differently or don’t have the correct connection types. You need one to convert an HDMI input into an audio-only source.įor example, your TV may receive sound and pictures from your Blu-ray player via HDMI – but you might want to use the built-in optical audio output to send the TV audio to your speaker system. Many devices, such as flat-screen TVs, have a physical or software-based HDMI audio converter built into them. Why Would You Want to Get the Audio From HDMI? However, once you decide you need one, you can expect to spend between $20 and $150 for the device, depending on the exact features you need. It is a fairly straightforward concept, and installing one is easy enough. You may also see these devices called HDMI audio converters or splitters. There are a few ways you might do this, but one easy solution is to buy an audio extractor box, which will allow you to split the HDMI picture and audio data. In most setups, you won’t need to do this you simply connect the HDMI output from your source device to the HDMI input in your display device.īut what if you want to send the picture via HDMI to your TV or projector and the audio somewhere else, like a surround sound speaker system?
We fall in love with our ideas, but they're not all good ideas. Even when PayPal had 20K employees and $10B in revenue, everyone still complained that they "couldn't get resources." Once you're on that treadmill, it never stops. If you study any big tech company, you'll see that 90% of their growth came from 10% of their work. People used to joke that Google had 60K employees, but only needed 1K (search + ads). But corporate bloat doesn't stop with sensible projects, it grows unchecked). PayPal needed to get better at risk, compliance, customer service, and core tech. Some of it was necessary, but a lot really wasn't. They brought in corporate playbooks and built huge teams. So what about the other 10K+ employees? After the acquisition, eBay hired "grownups," from Visa, Amex, McKinsey and some banks. I don't know Twitter, but if you study PayPal's history, you'll see that 90% of their early growth came from 5 big things: eBay, simple email & HTML tools, integrating with shopping carts, etc. I'd completely forgotten that moment until Elon announced that he'd "fire 75% of Twitter employees." Could they survive? "Honestly, I bet you could fire 70% of them and the company would keep running just fine. "I've run a payments company, it's not that complicated. He couldn't understand why we had so many employees. He'd just gotten to PayPal’s campus, and he was in shock. Late in my time there, maybe ten years ago, we acquired a company, and I early to a meeting with one of the founders. These big tech layoffs remind me of another crazy PayPal story… this one’s about how to avoid corporate bloat in your startup. Was firing 50% of Twitter employees a smart move? I greatly prefer to have my files backed up automatically 24/7, but some people will prefer to only have the software run at specific times. With scheduled backups, you pick a time of day (or a time of week,) and Mozy runs the backup process at that moment, once per day (or week.) What’s the difference? With automatic backups, when Mozy software detects a file change, it backs up that file immediately (as soon as system resources allow.) Basically, anytime your computer is idle, Mozy automatically backs up any file that has changed. Normally a backup service offers either automatic backups or scheduled backups – Mozy offers both! You get to choose the method that best suits your needs and lifestyle. In that case, you should be all set, so it is the time to sign-up! For my final recommendation…Īs you would expect, Mozy is packed with features. Will ship you a DVD containing your files if that is how you want to restore backups!īut I think you get the point that Mozy is a sweet addition to any computer!.Stores multiple versions of your changed files for 30 days, so you can always find what you want.Checks your computer every 2 hours to see if anything has changed and needs backed up.Your files are encrypted on your computer using 448-bit Blowfish encryption and then transferred to the Mozy servers using 128-bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption.I could go on to tell you all the cool stuff Mozy does, like… (Note that it can still take a while to connect to your control panel to change any settings, though, even on high-speed lines.) Well, now your important documents are being backed up! But what if something happens down the road and your files get lost? Then just restore the files through Mozy’s easy interface! All you have to do is select the files to restore and click “Restore.” Simple as that.Įverything should work flawlessly unless you’re on a dial-up connection. You don’t need to be a computer geek to get Mozy working properly! Restoring Backups Don’t worry though, the interface is nice and simple. You can check everything out in your online account, and even access a PDF instruction manual to keep you on the right track. Then just sit back and relax while Mozy does the hard work for you! Once it’s installed, you can select the files that you want to backup and configure some basic options (or advanced options, if you desire.) Just click the “Get Started” button to signup. (Note that you have to click to the Mozy Home page before you see a link to the Mozy Free edition.) Mozy Home is compatible with Windows 2000, XP, and Vista, and Mac OS X 10.4, so that covers most computers. While Carbonite was my personal choice for online backup due to ease of use, there is another service that is very similar, and that is the remote backup from Mozy, which seems to offer even more features. Website: Here is my full evaluation and review… Putting Mozy To The Test! Backed by a large, established company. But it is something to look at if you’re a CIO or even if you’re running a small business with valuable client data. Mozy’s Pro version offers additional enterprise-level features to handle the corporate environment, which we won’t really get into here. (Pre-paying for a year gets you 1 month free, while pre-paying for two years gets you 3 months free.) Mozy Home offers unlimited backups and basically everything a home user needs at $4.95 per month. The free version is designed for very basic backups, although it offers a nice 2 GB limit, which will backup plenty of documents. Mozy comes in three flavors (free, home, and pro) that are sure to handle everyone’s needs. |
